Green Growth is now widely accepted as the guiding principle for sustainable development of worldwide travel and tourism over the coming decades. But translating theory into practice is a challenge. It requires delivering Green Growth expertise and resources rapidly into travelism destinations which almost by definition are likely to be in remote locations in emerging economies with limited energy and communications infrastructures. And it demands direct engagement with local communities which is tailored to their special needs.
The SUN program is an ambitious international initiative to meet this challenge. At its heart is the concept of solar-powered SUN-ARK hubs with state-of-the-art telecommunications which can be set up quickly and easily in target travelism destinations to support world class experts working with local communities to deliver Green Growth solutions.
The SUN Program is being developed and driven by GGTI working with a range of partners, including:
- The SUNARK foundation, responsible for the SUN-ARK centres
- Civic Resources Group International (CRGI), responsible for the SUN-CONNECT knowledge platform
- GreenEarth, responsible for SUN-COMMUNITY outreach, working with partners including the SUN university network
